Carry On Cottaging

Hosted by Jonny Woo and Dan De La Motte

With guests

Ian Johns, Stuart Feather and DJ Martin Green

Jonny Woo takes us on a glorious jaunt through the public toilets of London with the help of gay historian and general boy about toilets, Dan De La Motte. ‘Cottages’ as they are known amongst gay men, were the public toilets where gay men used to gather and continue to gather for sexual encounters. At a time when all sexual activity between gay men was illegal ‘cottages’ were often the only places where gay men could meet sexual partners. Cottages have been the places where many men enjoyed their first sexual encounters and even today many of us can’t resist a trip to the public toilets in stations or by roadside for some spontaneous cubicle or urinal erotic activity. Jonny and Dan are joined by Ian Johns, Stuart Feather and music is supplied by Martin Green. This event is part of Jonny’s research for his play ‘Silvertown’ set in a gay pub in 1967 in the London Docks and will include readings of extracts from the play.

This event is supported by The Arts Council of England Lottery Fund. Co-Commissioned by Theatre Royal Stratford East and The Royal Docks
